Back to Basics: Revenue Share

September 15, 2011
sharing

Sharing is good. Even cooties.

In the second post of this Back to Basics series, we looked at the advantages and disadvantages of direct sales. For this third post, we’ll do the same thing for revenue share.

Revenue share is any kind of work where you write for a site and earn a share of their revenue (whether from advertising, distribution or some other means) depending on the popularity of your content and/or ad clicks when your work is displayed.

Coming Soon: Half A Pig

September 14, 2011

Anyone who’s been keeping an eye on the Book Project gauge over on the right will have noticed that it’s moving along. The final few thousand words are all that’s needed for completion.

If you’ve checked out the info page, you’ll have seen that it’s about being a freelance writer without doing any marketing.

If all goes to plan, in a couple of days I’ll reveal a lot more – the title, what’s in it, who it’s for… and I’ll also start looking for proofers to get an opinion from the fledgeling freelancer public. Stay tuned and make sure you don’t miss it!

September 13, 2011

Gimme da munny!

In the first post of this Back to Basics series, we looked at the three main categories of work. The first of these – direct sales – covers any kind of work that is done for or sold to a client for a specific, one-off payment.

Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of direct sales:

Back to Basics: Ways to Earn

September 12, 2011

You don't have to be a (USB) pole dancer to earn!

This first post in the Back to Basics series defines the different ways to make money with words. While I’m sure some professionals will disagree with my simplification, it’s intended as a basic summary, not a detailed analysis.

You might also like to read the Ways to Work post for a “helicopter view” of the freelancing market.

As a freelance writer, there are three basic categories of online earning:

  1. Direct sales
  2. Revenue share
  3. Work for yourself

Just like any kind of work, each has advantages and disadvantages.

Let’s start by looking at how each of the different earning styles can be defined:

Here’s how the “Back to Basics” series will look (they’ll be links once they’re posted):

Breakthrough In Cure For Cancer Search

August 11, 2011

This is completely unrelated to freelancing, writing or anything else normally covered on this blog… but I have to post it because I lost both my parents to cancer.

Yahoo news has an article today about an amazing therapy that has wiped out leukemia in two of three test subjects and greatly improved the condition in the third. This could be a big step forward in the search for a cancer cure.

Of course, it still needs extensive testing and the long-term effects must be evaluated (it’s only a year in at the moment but the patients remain in remission) but it’s great news.

Something to brighten your day and bring hope to millions of cancer sufferers around the globe.
