And So Into September
Another month flies by and suddenly we’re in September. Assuming you subscribe to the Gregorian calendar, of course. I mean, for all I know it could be Ninglemonth or Bilwopitlog where you are. Let’s stick with September.
August was a strange time again. Lots of work came suddenly, then went just as quickly. Sort of like swine ‘flu, though it was probably better for my health and caused less of a polemic.
Two of my clients seem to have disappeared for the moment (perhaps related to that UFO over on Google last week… who knows?) and two more jobs have finished, leaving me with just the low-paid blog for the moment. Even that one’s had a personality change, with pay agreements being disputed. It must be the weather.
Speaking of weather, we’ve had a few very windy days here on the south coast of the UK, which have caused havoc with my connection. Anyone would think I was using two plastic cups and a piece of string, the way the wind affects my WiFi. I’m not: it’s just one of the wonders of nature, how radio waves are actually affected by a strong breeze. It messed with the work, though.
Perhaps the wind is what affected Elance, too. After their (second) security problem and the dubious response, I’ve had absolutely no luck in getting any kind of answers from them. I even contacted them through Twitter and just got a “read the statement” response (though not in those words). Very disappointed in that.
All in all, the month was busy: the project of editing press releases for an Eastern European games company turned out to be quite a nice earner as they rebuilt their web pages (and needed them edited) as well; the out-of-the-blue contact for a book edit was more work than I thought, but was really interesting (and the client a lovely lady who lives quite locally); the business blogger has disappeared for the moment after a trip to India.
So I’m back on Elance and trawling the web for a bit of extra stuff to keep my fingers busy and my brain from congealing into a mass of strawberry-flavoured jelly. Sorry, Kate, nothing for you to juggle.
I’ll be updating the earnings blog as soon as I can.
How was your month?

Is the Georgian calendar anything like the Gregorian calendar?
Oh dear. Changed. Thanks, Steven – my brain’s on holiday today!
A little while ago I got kicked off of some lady’s grammar Facebook thingamajig. She wanted folks to try and solve the puzzle, to the effect of “Each of the students went to their/his or her classes for the first time today.” The question, “Which verb?” To which I replied it was a convoluted sentence which could have been reduced to “Students went to their classes for the first time today” followed by “Why are you asking about verbs?”
She returns, saying, “I was stunned that no one replied! That explains why no one replied! I meant verb!”
I wrote, “That was a convoluted sentence contrived to make folks make a silly mistake because of the ‘each’ trick word. Folks were probably stunned by the fact that you had a sentence fragment at the end of the instructions.” Then she called me a nasty grammar Nazi. You know my response to that already: “I’m not a grammar Nazi. I’m a grammar Jew.”
Anyways, short story long – I think everyone makes mistakes. I know I do all the time. But I also have this old habit where I actually read over what I wrote, and sometimes even rewrite what I wrote.
What is the point to all this? Where’ve you been ye olde dawg? I hope I don’t see your blog in the overcrowded blog cemetery after a few more months.
Nice update, Cobber! Fascinating to hear what you’ve been up to. I’ve been tinkering with EzineArticles and BlogTopSites. Much has been promised. It’ll be interesting to see if they deliver. I hope Setpember turns out well for you. With best regards from your antipodean admirer. P.
Steven: The annoying thing about re-reading is that the brain often overlooks the same mistake, every time. Caught one on my most recent post just before posting, despite two or three re-reads! Bah. Silly brain.
Paul: I’ve never tried either of those, though from the massive amount of (badly-paid) offers on GAF for Ezine content, it sounds like it’s going to be around for a while. Would be interesting to hear about the experience!
Pretty impressed with BlogTopSites so far. Easy to use and fascinating to see one’s rank relative to other blogs.
Registering my blogs also triggered pleasing traffic spikes. Will let you know if they continue.
It seems there are hundreds of sites like BlogTopSites (which doesn’t appear to be the biggest or most glam). I’ll let you know if I find kindred sites that are better. Best regards, P.
Submitted one article to EzineArticles. They make you jump through a lot of hoops formatwise. Quite fiddly and time consuming.
Yet several bloggers I’ve read insist it’s a great use for old articles and rejigged posts.
I’m still in the Pending pool after several days. Seems you need to upgrade to get faster service. Funny thatl. I will wait, see and report. P.
