Elance Security Breach – Update

2009 July 19

It’s been a couple of days since I posted the news about Elance’s security breach. There’s been no more information forthcoming by email, though they are now taking steps to boost security, it seems.

They are now sending emails which contain a special “security” link: this is sent to the account’s registered email address and enforces a password change.

While some may say it’s bloting the stable door after the horse has bolted, at least it means no more horses will get away. For the moment.

HI spike, great posts. Since the elance security breach both my email accounts have been hacked, with sensitive financial info in my inbox which is now at risk. A good learning curve and wake up call as I have been pretty slack about using the same passwords on multiple accounts. Now feeling pretty paranoid, and not too happy with using elance I can tell you. If this can happen on a site like this what’s to stop it happening on Amazon or any other sites wiht my credit card info? Do you know?

Natalie: Oh my goodness! That’s awful. Security comes down to the site and the skill of the hacker – there’s no perfect defence, unfortunately. I’d suggest notifying your bank, so they’re aware of the problem: they’re usually pretty good on ID Theft issues. Best of luck…
